Talking about Horror

I watched a video of a man talking about the horror genre to understand the horror genre more and how horror movies are edited to make them more scary. He talks about the different camera angles used in horror films to make then seem alot scarier. I got inspiration from this video for my opening titles to see ways in which I could use camera angles to make it like a 'real' horror film.

Editing our Opening Titles

This is a screenshot we took when we was moving all our clips around to put in the right place before we edited them.

We wanted to make this shot so it was sped up, so the pouring of the liquid could all fit in. We did this by right clicking on the clip and clicking on 'Time Stretch' then changing the percentage to a lower number than 100% to slow the speed. To make a clip faster you had to increase the percentage.

In this screenshot we was trimming the shot to make it cut off before she screamed, so we could then add the title of the film and have a non-diagetic scream over the top.

George Romero
George Romero is an American-Canadian film director, film producer, screenwriter and editor. He is best known for his series of gruesome and humorous horror films about a hypothetical zombie apocalypse, beginning with Night of the Living Dead.


Sam Raimi
Samuel Raimi is an American film director, producer, writer and actor, famous for directing the cult horror comedy Evil Dead series, the superhero film Darkman, and the Spider-Man trilogy.

Tobe Hooper
William Tobe Hooper is an American film director, screenwriter, and producer best known for his work in the horror film genre. His 1974 film, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, was described as "one of the most influential films ever made".



 

History of Horrors

New horror films always get ideas from old films all the time but just use a mix of subgenres and new techniques to make something for the culture of today.

Horror Films in the Silent Era

Silent films became very popular around the 1930's. It was from Gothic literature that the first horror films found inspiration. The genre was popular in both books and theater at the time. The term horror did not come into use for film until the 1930s but filmmakers and film goers showed an interest in the macabre which is shown in this clip of a “Spook Tale” from 1895 created by the Lumiere brothers.




In 1896 Georges Méliès created what is considered to be the first horror film ever made..
“The Manor of the Devil” – with bats, castles, trolls, ghosts, and a demon

Here is me filming kayleigh, while joe is recording us explaining what is going on.

Production Company Logo

 

This is the logo of the production company we have created. The colours we used for our logo is red and black, to show danger . The use of these colours is interesting as black is a very dull and dark colour, whereas red is a bright colour. Also these are colours a clown would wear. The name sadistic studios is to emphasise the fact its to do with horror, as sadistic means getting pleasure from inflicting pain, suffering, or humiliation on others.

Filming Our Opening Tiles

When we starting filming the first night, after a few hours of recording the camera battery ran out so we couldnt continue. When we then watched the clips we recorded, when we were back at school, they wasnt very good and what we expecting. The shots outside were too dark and the sound wasnt very loud on some of the clips. So we then decided to re film it all again, as the continuity wasnt good either as we moved things in different places while recorded and it didnt run smoothly.

This was us filming outside. We had trouble with the lighting as the first time we recorded, when we played it back to ourselfs we noticed that we couldnt see the shot very clearly. Because of this we re-recorded the outside shots and used torches and phone flash lights to brighten the shot, so we could see more clearly.

 

 

 

This was us recording the inside shots of kayleigh washing up. We took various different types of shots at different angles. We noticed in a few of the shots we could see the camera and us recording in the reflection of the window, so we had to record the shots again making sure we culd ot see us in the reflection with the camera.

We had to keep everything the same in the shots so the continuity was the same throughout. However we made a mistake of leaving the microphone in one of the shots, so we had to re-record these shots.

 

 

Me ad Joe took it in turns to record kayleigh for the inside shots.

 

So we could get the microphone near kayleigh to pick up her speaking on the phone clearly, we had to improvise and put the microphone on the end of a stick to get quality sound.
